Ruth Roman is the youngest daughter born to Lithuanian and Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) and Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. In her early years, Ruth Roman's father, a carnival barker, passed away and made her mother Mary Pauline (Gold), to become a waitress or cleaner in order for them to remain alive. Ruth grew up in the poor tenement district in Boston, Massachusetts, where she was educated. She left school after two short years to pursue acting. She faced many obstacles on her chosen career path. In New York she was hired to do a photo shoot in a crime magazine however, no theatre job opportunities came up. After working as a hat-check girl at a nightclub she quit and returned to Boston. There she earned a living in the ushering industry during the day, and at night performed with the New England Repertory Company. It was her first job as an actor. She earned a bachelor's diploma in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
